Pulmonology
Breathing is the basis of life itself, and the functioning of the respiratory system directly affects our wellbeing. Specialists in pulmonology and allergology can diagnose and treat respiratory diseases and allergies, also performing specific examinations for every need.
Cough, wheezing or shortness of breath? When a pulmonology visit is needed
A cough that won’t go away, shortness of breath or night-time snoring can be signals worth checking. A specialist visit is recommended in case of:
- Persistent cough or breathing difficulties
- Recurrent episodes of bronchitis or lung infections
- Seasonal allergies
- Shortness of breath (dyspnoea)
- Wheezing
- Chest pain
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Snoring and sleep apnoea
- A feeling of chest tightness or respiratory fatigue
- Current or past smoking
- Family history of lung disease
- Exposure to risk factors such as air pollution or asbestos
- Congenital diseases, chest trauma or tumours
When is it advisable to book a specialist pulmonology visit?
In the presence of persistent airway symptoms that do not resolve with common short-term treatments: a chronic cough lasting more than three or four weeks, shortness of breath (dyspnoea) on exertion or at rest, wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing, chest pain or marked chest tightness, persistent phlegm or traces of blood in the sputum. The visit is also recommended as periodic preventive screening for smokers and former smokers, or for those who work in contact with dust, paints and toxic fumes.
What is spirometry, how is it performed and what is it for?
It is the reference diagnostic test for assessing lung function: painless and non-invasive, it is performed by breathing into a sterile mouthpiece connected to a spirometer, which measures the volume of air in the lungs and the speed at which it is expelled during a forced exhalation. It is carried out in real time during the visit and is essential for the early diagnosis of obstructive diseases (such as asthma and COPD) or restrictive diseases.
How is bronchial asthma diagnosed and treated?
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes a temporary, reversible narrowing of the bronchi, with episodes of breathlessness, dry cough and wheezing. Diagnosis is based on a careful history of the symptoms and confirmed by spirometry, often combined with a reversibility test (repeating the examination after inhaling a bronchodilator). Treatment involves personalised therapy plans with latest-generation inhaled medications.
Pulmonology services available at MediSport Center
Clinical history, chest examination and assessment of respiratory symptoms, from which the specialist plans any further tests.
Non-invasive measurement of blood oxygen saturation through a finger sensor.
Measures how much air you can breathe in and out and how fast: the basic test of lung function.
Spirometry repeated after a bronchodilator to see whether the obstruction is reversible, as in asthma.
Also measures the air remaining in the lungs after a full exhalation, useful in studying emphysema and restrictive diseases.
Assesses how effectively oxygen passes from the alveoli into the blood: indicated in fibrosis, emphysema and other interstitial lung diseases.
Six minutes of free-paced walking while monitoring saturation and heart rate: a simple measure of exercise tolerance.
A stress test measuring oxygen consumption breath by breath, assessing heart and lung function together.
Small amounts of allergens applied to the skin to identify sensitisations: prick tests for respiratory and food allergies, patch tests for contact dermatitis.
Specific IgE measured on a blood sample: useful when skin tests cannot be performed or to confirm their results.
Scheduled follow-up visits to check that therapy is working and adjust it over time.
Assessment of the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea, with referral to polysomnography when needed: important for snorers, daytime sleepiness or professional drivers.
